ACTION ALERT FROM THE NATIONAL ANIMAL INTEREST ALLIANCE
California Senate Bill 716 would ban the use of the elephant guide (also called a bull hook/ankus) in the State of California beginning in 2018. It would apply not only to circuses but zoos and all other elephant exhibitors and facilities in California. The Senate Public Safety committee is currently reviewing the bill, with a possible hearing later this month. NAIA applauds the bill’s goals to make sure that elephants are being treated safely and respectfully but disagrees that the method chosen will be successful. Banning the use of the elephant guide will create a host of unintended consequences that negatively impact both elephants and people without accomplishing the sponsor’s goals.
